To paraquat, 2016 will be an important time. According to the No.1745 Notice of the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China, since July 1, 2014, China has cancelled the registration and production approval of the paraquat AS and stopped its production. On July 1, 2016, China will stop the sales and use of the aqueous solution in the country. On July 28, 2015, the General Office of the Ministry of Agriculture issued the Minutes of the 17th Plenary Session of the 8th National Review Committee of Pesticide Registration, according to which the Review Committee changed the toxicity level of paraquat to hypertoxicity and suggested that it’s better to no longer handle or approve applications for paraquat registration and to withdraw existing registration of paraquat products at an appropriate time. Internationally, more and more countries are prohibiting the use of paraquat.
Despite a decreasing demand, the after-markets still uncertain
Paraquat is one of the most cost-effective products among sterilant herbicides currently on the market. With very few resistant weed varieties, paraquat is irreplaceable to some extent. Moreover, paraquat can be used as a defoliant and increase soil biodiversity. However, as an increasing number of countries are forbidding the use of paraquat, its international demand will decrease; on the other hand, domestic policy pressure has led to a sharp drop in its domestic demand. Despite a less-than-expected demand, the after-market of paraquat is still uncertain.
